Why Monopoly?

I chose Monopoly for several reasons. The first reason is because I've been playing this game since I was 10 years old, and I love it. The second is because of all the different boards they have from iconic pop-culture outlets. My favorite board is the Breaking Bad one. The third reason is that me any my mom would play this all the time growing up and it holds a special place in my heart now that she's gone.I recommend anyone to this game, it's fun and challenging especially with more players.

Overview

Monopoly is a fun, and sometimes competitive, board game to play with friends and family. Your goal is to become a monopoly and own everything on the board.

Careful, though, remember this is just a game and no friendships need to be ruined over this.

What You Need

  • At least 2 players, but no more than 8
  • Monopoly board game:
  • Playing surface
  • 2 die
  • 32 Houses and 12 Hotels
  • Player tokens
  • Chance and Community Chest cards
  • Title Deed cards
  • Playing money
  • Bankers' tray

Setup

To set the game up you need to lay the board out, organize and seperate all the cards into sections, and give out $1,500 to each player in equal denominations.

How to Play

To play the game, begin by rolling the die to see who goes first (or go from youngest to oldest, or any order you want). Then begin rolling the die and moving around the board.

When you land on properties you can elect to by them or send them to auction. Once you own all of a property color you can begin building houses and hotels per the card's instructions.

If you land on a Community Chest or Chance card, draw the top card and do as it says.

If you land on someone else's property, you must pay them rent. Once you pass go be sure to collect your $200 dollars.

If you roll doubles: Move as the die require, handle any business for that section of the board, and roll again. If you roll doubles three times in a row, go to jail.

Scoring and Winning

You can win by becoming a monopoly. Your bank account is your score and the goal is for you to collect everyone else's money and be the last player standing.

Common Mistakes and Tips

Buy early while you can, don't let all the properties be eaten up by your opponents!

Free parking is just a safe spot to land on, you do not get any advantage in the game for landing there.

When you go to jail, do not pass go and do not collect the $200 you otherwise would have.

FAQ and Edge Cases

Building: You can build once you own all the properties of one color and you must pay the price according to the title deed cards.
Building Shortages: If you want to build and there are no houses or hotels available then you must wait for another player to return or upgrade their property. If two or more players want to build at the same time in a shortage the house will be sold to the highest bidder.
Selling property: You can sell any property via a private transaction between any players. If the property has been built on then all houses and hotels must first be sold back to the bank prior to sale.
Mortages: Any unimproved property can be mortgaged, or houses/hotels must be sold prior to mortgage. In order to lift the mortgage and resume collecting rent you must pay the bank the mortgaged amount plus 10% (i.e. $100 plus %10 = $110). You can sell mortgaged property for any price, but the mortgage can only be lifted by the property owner.
Bankruptcy: You are bankrupt when you owe more money than you can pay. You lose.
Most importantly: Any of these rules can be changed at any time according to your gameplay, be as forgiving or as ruthless as you please.
